Alpha 1.0 Release

BOOK & BLADE - Alpha 1.0

Hi I'm Thomas and I've been working on this project for the last three weeks. I've had this basic idea for a long time: you have a spellbook in one hand and a sword in the other.  I've been programming and working with Godot for a few solid months now, but I've failed to produce any worthwhile projects. This was the first concept that really stuck with me. It felt really good to finally commit to one idea and see it through to completion, or at least an alpha.

My original idea was to keep the combat in real-time. After throwing together a quick test build, I quickly realized this would be difficult. There was absolutely no readability, the combat was such a free-for-all. I had like ten different timers running at once to stop the player from performing six different actions at once, and anyone who played the game had no clue when they could attack or what was happening.

So, I made the quick decision to go turn-based. Immediately, the game felt alive. So much more strategy was poured over my chaotic battle system. Players have to think about their moves and ensure they're not making the wrong choice. The current enemies of the game are pretty easy, so don't expect much deep strategy in this version!

I'm so excited to continue chipping away at this project. I've been staring at this for three weeks straight and it's time for me to jump into another idea, but I will 100% continue to expand this game in the future. In the meantime, here's a list of features to expect from this version:

FEATURES:

  • 10 spell books
  • 10 blades
  • 10 enemies
  • A working element-matchup system. (Example: Fire enemies are weak to Water attacks.)
  • Gain experience and level up.
  • Maximum health and magic increase on level up.
  • The game auto-saves whenever you kill an enemy.
